Frequently Asked Questions
- Is it hard to give the puppy back?
This is one of the most common questions we get! Every raiser will tell you that we love every dog that comes into our home and it can be very hard to send them off to puppy "college". We know they are going on to do great things and when you get to see your puppy acting all grown up and working with their person it makes every moment worth it. - What breeds are used as Guide Dogs?
Guide Dogs for the Blind breeds and uses Black and Yellow Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, and Lab/Golden crosses. Seventy percent of the puppies are Labs. - How long would it take for me to get a puppy?
Depending upon circumstances, such as litter availability and raiser/home approval, it can take 2 to 5 months to receive a puppy. - What would I need to provide for the puppy; what would Guide Dogs provide?
A raiser is responsible for providing feeding bowls, food, and some toys. The club will supply a green puppy vest, and other helpful training tools. Guide Dogs for the Blind will provide two sizes of collars with identification, two leashes (leather leash for first time raisers only), flea and heartworm medication, YES-spaces, basic grooming supplies, and all paperwork connected with the puppy. The Guide Dogs also covers all veterinary expenses for the puppies while in training. - How do I find a local puppy raising club in my area?
Contact the Puppy Raising Department at Guide Dogs for the Blind (1-800-295-4050) or fill out the puppy raising interest form on the GDB website. A member of the staff can provide you with the contact information of a leader in your area. - Are the cost of raising a Guide Dog puppy tax deductible?
Yes, Guide Dogs for the blind is a nonprofit charitable organization, and all expenses incurred be the raiser as they relate to raising the puppy (dog food, veterinary bills, gas mileage, toys, etc.) are considered a donation to Guide Dogs. Guide Dogs suggests all puppy raisers a consult with a tax advisor to receive the proper IRS requirements for documentation. - Are there meetings to attend with the puppy?
Yes. Puppy raising groups meet regularly under the direction of a leader(s) trained by Guide Dogs for the Blind. These informational meetings offer a place to learn about training techniques, meet other raisers and participate in excursions with the puppy. Please visit our calendar of events page to find our next meting.
Yes! Our club meets regularly to offer support to our raisers and puppies. Meetings are a great place to learn about training techniques, meet other raisers, and get your puppy out to experience new things. Our young puppies (8 weeks-24 weeks) meet weekly to ensure every pup gets the best start possible.
